The very first drive into the park on 6th October08. The car reached the great Kanha meadow and I was wondering here and there and suddenly the chittal gone mad and the lord of the jungle came out on the road 100mtr away. A male tiger on the road literally displaying, masking by spraying, scratching and scatting, after that the mating call of a male tiger the ambience changed and then he disappeared in the jungle.
As a naturalist my professional world at Kanha started in a majestic way. Happy times at Kipling Camp, birds, butterfly and the spotted deer, sloth bear, leopard and tiger also I observed from the camp. But then 2nd November,’08, the tiger I saw from the camp died in a electricution trap at a nearby village. The first blow and then news on death of deer, Sambar, wild boar started coming. I was studying this tiger because he was a brother of another male tiger and both this tiger became cattle lifter. Then 3rd of January we lost 3 cubs of one female. Then I was studying the brother of dead tiger and from October to December I found that he kills more during the full moon and I started feeling that this one is a lunatic one. The thing was going on really nice time started.
January’09 1st January the new year started with a brilliant sighting a male tiger on the Kanha main road walked down almost 2 km. All of us were happy. None of us expected a fortune like this. 16th January’09 he died he was my favourite tiger who I called as ‘Kan Kata’ died a very fishy death. After two day mean 18th January 2 cubs of another female died I was shocked but more shocked was their in store for me my cattle lifter died on 20th January. I was spechless on that day. 26th January another collared male died. Believe me in all the case forest department said they died in infighting. Why they are fighting so much? No answer at that time.
Then in February two thing started one is the shift of a female tiger from Kanha to Panna and forest fire. 30% of Kanha’s tourism zone were burnt by fire and there is no absolute data about the animal loss. Then on 20th January’09 another male tiger died and forest dpt. said “death due to infighting and the male female ratio decreased so the male tigers of Kanha fighting that much.” and the funniest thing is that they decided to shift one of the most important breeding female to Panna. So they actually wanted the male tiger to fight more and die. But some how the protest of the locals compelled them to sent another female who was much more dispersive in nature. And then again a bad news the oldest female of Kanha lost one of her cub according to the peoples it died in the forest fire. Now when I was observing all this thing sitting at Kanha more bad news are coming from all the other protected Areas.
I just want to ask one question researchers are carrying out research and coming up with no conclusion we are trying to prove us as the supreme power but we forget one truth nature created us so its not possible for us to act as the mentor of nature and the people who believes that coexistence possible they forget the theory that says no two super predator can coexists and I believe we are worse than any of them as a super predator. So we need to leave the place for the tigers and lions and other super predators and also have to leave the ambition to become the mentor of nature.
